Pharmaceutical drugs: Trade or brand names Authors Carles Riera Universitat Ramon Llull Keywords: drug, brand or trade name, descriptive names, invented or fantasy names Abstract In this paper we present a comprehensive sampling of the trade or brand names of drugs, studying their origin and classifying them into two groups: descriptive names and invented or fantasy names. The first group is subclassified according to the various characteristics of the drugs (such as chemical classification, activity, target organ, plant species, chemical composition, pharmaceutical company, profit indicator, etc.). Particularly notable for their sheer quantity are those that refer to a generic name and those whose name has to do with the benefit the drug in question is supposed to provide the patient.
