Mind the gap: lexicographical gaps in earth and environmental science textbooks in primary and secondary school Authors Elisenda Bernal Universitat Pompeu Fabra https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8287-7281 Albert Morales Moreno Universitat Oberta de Catalunya https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3068-0767 DOI: 10.2436/20.2503.01.240 Keywords: basic specialized vocabulary, school terminology, earth and environmental sciences, general dictionary, lexicographic gaps Abstract Our analysis compares a set of terms found in earth and environmental science textbooks (published between 2015 and 2025 by the main educational publishers in Catalonia) with their presence or absence in Catalan dictionaries (see Estopà, 2025, in this issue). The study includes materials used in both primary and compulsory secondary education. We specifically focus on words that appear in textbooks but are not included in either the normative dictionary of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans or the DIDAC school dictionary, published by the group Enciclopèdia Catalana. Also presented is a brief analysis of the factors behind these lexical gaps, which can be explained by lexicographic decisions as well as by the level of specialization of the terms.
