Abstract

The author of this paper describes the whole process of the establishment of an approved official degree throughout Spain for the dietitian nutritionist profession – a process which she personally experienced and in which she actively participated with other professionals of this sector. This process started in the early 1970s, when people in Spain had to go abroad to obtain training in this field. This situation came to an end when laws were passed in Spain that allowed consensual proposals to be made, reflecting those of other countries, going from a “special degree” to an “official diploma” and, finally, within the framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), to a four-year study programme, the Human Nutrition and Dietetics degree, in 2009. The paper also deals with the importance of association for a profession such as this and the need to establish a code of ethics setting out the rules of ethical conduct and good professional practices.
