Abstract

This article seeks to clarify some insuffi ciently known aspects of food supplements, including which name is most appropriate for them in Catalan, what is legally understood by “food supplement”, what the legal evolution of food supplements has been like in the European Union (EU) and in Spain (focusing on those based on substances other than vitamins and minerals), what restrictive and punitive commercialization measures are applied by the Spanish authorities, how safe food supplements are, and to what extent they are necessary and useful.
