Riding on common names, the natural way of naming nature Authors Pere Renom Universitat Pompeu Fabra https://orcid.org/0009-0008-5093-8503 DOI: 10.2436/20.2503.01.224 Keywords: cavall, etimologia, expansió del significat, evolució del llenguatge, pensament Abstract At the end of 2024 the «Diccionari dels mamífers del món» was presented, a monumental work that offers the denomination in Catalan of 6,793 species of mammals from all over the world. Hence, Catalan joins other languages such as English, French, German and Spanish, which have their own names for all known mammal species. The Latin binominal nomenclature is the way in which science orders and classifies the diversity of living beings. However, common names are still fundamental to describe nature, and allow us to understand the notion of meaning, its extensions, reflect the adaptation to the environment, the evolution of language and contribute to the construction of our thinking. Author Biography Pere Renom, Universitat Pompeu Fabra Pere Renom i Vilaró és llicenciat en Biologia per la Universitat de Barcelona i doctor en Biomedicina per la Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Investiga en l’àmbit de la macroevolució, associat a l’Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (CSIC-UPF). La seva principal ocupació és la comunicació científica a premsa i televisió. Del 2006 al 2019 va treballar de redactor i reporter al programa de divulgació científica de la Televisió de Catalunya «Quèquicom». Actualment fa seccions setmanals de ciència en directe al programa «Tot es mou», i dirigeix i presenta el nou programa de ciència «Quèqui».
