Abstract

This study explores the challenges and opportunities of the employment of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the communication and public relations (PR) sector. Specifically, its aim is to analyze whether some of the skills of people with ASD align closely with those required by the sector. Moreover, we seek to determine which actions should be taken by communication and PR companies to suitably integrate workers with ASD. A qualitative methodology divided into two phases is followed, including: (1) in-depth interviews with six professionals – three with ASD and three employers – and (2) content analysis of seven online testimonials from autistic people working in the communication and PR sector. Based on our results, we develop a SWOT matrix. The main weaknesses detected include differences in social and communication skills, rigidity, sensory overload and low flexibility. Threats derive from stigma, ignorance, discrimination and invisibility of the diagnosis. Numerous strengths are identified, such as creative thinking, attention to detail, honesty, perseverance and analytical capacity. Opportunities are linked to the benefits of diversity, artificial intelligence and a favorable legal context. It is concluded that people with ASD have valuable skills for the communication sector, provided they have adapted work environments.
