In this research, we aim to explore the contributions of Language and Terminology Studies to fostering new understandings on the concept of HL consideringnthe socioeconomic and educational challenges experienced in Brazil. In addition to providing an overview of HL in Brazil, this paper also reviews a set of experiments made while developing MedSimples, a system designed to help promote HL using plain Portuguese.
