Abstract

Natural sciences and translation: transdisciplinary nomenclatures conversations

To promote awareness towards the protection of biodiversity, a name for each species in each different language is needed, but how does the specialized translator proceed when confronted with this muddle of information about living beings to name and translate correctly? Common names are ambiguous, the codes of biological nomenclatures are overflowing, and expert knowledge is transformed when disseminated and democratized through networks such as Wikipedia. Experts, speakers and mediators adopt different approaches to knowledge, which generates different perspectives depending on the language. So, should there be official common names bridge the gap?
