The food industry in the Eixample district of Barcelona (1868-1970): The sugar and soup pasta industry

Abstract

All through the 19th century an important food industry developed in the Eixample district of Barcelona. This paper analyses in detail three of these companies: two sugar refineries and one factory producing soup pasta. They are Refinería Barcelonesa de Azúcar (1880-1899), Refinería de San Luis (1889-1940) and Pastas Alimenticias Ramón Flo, the producer of El Pavo cannelloni, which was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and became an important reference in the food sector.
