The Climate Crisis in Education: From Neglect to Action Authors Isabel Ruiz Mallén Universitat Oberta de Catalunya DOI: 10.2436/20.2503.01.229 Keywords: climate change education, climate crisis, school curriculum, ecosocial education, systemic change Abstract Climate change education is a relatively recent addition to the school curriculum, despite the fact that climate change has been a part of our daily reality for decades. In Catalonia heatwaves, floods, and wildfires have a direct impact on public health, infrastructure, and school operations. The new educational legislation (LOMLOE and Decree 175/2022) introduces climate crisis content in both primary and secondary education through a cross-curricular approach rooted in ecosocial education. This perspective fosters critical awareness, action, and ethical engagement among students. The education approach aims to develop knowledge and competencies through real-life experiences, such as schoolyard greening projects, encouraging a transformative climate change education aligned with sustainability and global justice.
