Communicating Science in Times of Climate Emergency Authors Àngela Justamante Rodríguez Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals (CREAF) DOI: 10.2436/20.2503.01.228 Keywords: climate emergency, science communication, outreach, citizen science, misinformation, social engagement Abstract The recent Copernicus report warns that we have already surpassed 1.5 °C of global warming—an alarming milestone that calls for an effective and responsible communication response. In this context, CREAF (Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications) stands out for its pioneering work in science communication, supported by a multidisciplinary team that tailors messages to diverse social profiles to make the climate crisis understandable and relevant. From educational projects like Desfake Clima, which helps teenagers detect misinformation, to Esfera Climàtica, which trains female researchers as media spokespersons, CREAF embraces science outreach as a tool for social connection. The centre also promotes citizen science through initiatives such as Alerta Forestal and RitmeNatura, and collaborates with artists and content creators to expand impact and humanize messages. This holistic approach demonstrates that effective science communication is essential to addressing today’s environmental challenges and mobilizing society.
