Names of drugs derived from the names of laboratories: Generic and branded (or commercial) drugs Authors Carles Riera Fonts Universitat Ramon Llull https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9461-4924 DOI: 10.2436/20.2503.01.200 Abstract This article offers a description of the main trends in the creation of the names of drugs, whether generic or branded, focusing on those whose name originated from the names of the pharmaceutical companies or laboratories that own the respective patent and that market the drugs. Also described are the characteristics that are taken into account in the selection process of drug names. As is well known, medicines with generic names contain the same active ingredients as branded or commercial medicines and must meet the same quality and safety standards. Author Biography Carles Riera Fonts, Universitat Ramon Llull Carles Riera i Fonts (Moià, 1959) és doctor en Filologia Catalana, llicenciat en Farmàcia i té estudis de Teologia. Especialista en el camp del llenguatge científic i docent d’aquesta matèria des de l’any 1987, és autor de nombrosos llibres (Manual de català científic,1992; Curs de lèxic científic, 1998, o Manual de traducció de textos científics de l’anglès al català, 2014, entre d’altres) i de nombrosos articles (publicats a Terminàlia i en altres revistes especialitzades). Exerceix de professor a la Facultat de Comunicació i Relacions Internacionals de la Universitat Ramon Llull i a la Facultat de Ciències de la Salut d’aquesta mateixa Universitat.
