Šolem Aleychem: “Benny’s Luck” ( ( דאָס דרייד ל or the art of recounting nostalgia for the Jewish world Authors Joan Ferrer Universitat de Girona Keywords: Šolem Aleychem, Dos dreydl, Yiddish literature, nostalgia, lost world Abstract This article presents the first translation into Catalan of a story by Šolem Aleychem, who is regarded as one of Yiddish literature’s greatest writers. Originally written in 1903, “Benny’s Luck” ( דאָס דרייד ל ), entitled “El virolet” in Catalan, can be seen as emblematic of the narrative artistry and style of a writer who was widely read and openly loved by 20th-century Jewish readers. The story requires a good knowledge of Ashkenazi Judaism, depicted here through a boy’s memories, which prodigiously convey nostalgia for an irretrievably lost world.
