Jewish necropolis, Montjuïc, Barcelona, tombstone with an epigraph, medieval, 14th century

Abstract

The main aim of this article is to pay tribute to Jordi Casanovas Miró, who passed away in March 2020. And what better way to do so than by presenting a new epigraph-bearing tombstone from the Jewish necropolis of Montjuïc (Barcelona), identified through archaeological work conducted in early 2021? The monolith was discovered thanks to a member of the public, who found it on the Montjuïc hillside, close to number 76 Avinguda Miramar, and reported it. The work undertaken has resulted in the recovery of a new specimen of a tombstone with an epigraph. The tombstone is in good condition but was in a secondary position and, consequently, not associated with any of the tombs of the necropolis. Its inscription comprises three lines, the first of which is only partially preserved. Studying the tombstone has made it possible to transcribe and translate the inscription and, thus, to date it to the 14th century, specifically the year 1334.
