Vowel-zero alternations in Modern Hebrew: the case of prosodic compounds

Authors

Abstract

In Modern Hebrew, some nouns undergo obligatory /a/-syncope in the antepretonic position. Additionally, the vowel /a/ optionally syncopates in the pretònic position in non-final members of compounds. In this article, we offer a prosodic analysis of /a/-syncope in Modern Hebrew compounds, based on the idea that this phenomenon is only justified in weak positions and that non-final members of compounds constitute weak positions.
