Abstract

This article discusses the cultural importance of board games and contrasts it with that of games of chance. It highlights the historical and cultural significance of board games and gives examples of games that have become milestones in human history, citing examples such as the Royal Game of Ur, Chess or Go. The text also addresses the lack of recognition by administrations and cultural institutions, as well as the legal, social and cultural status of board games. The author points out the discrepancies and legal definitions that exclude them from areas such as cultural funding. Finally, one demand is made regarding the linguistic authority of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the terminology of games, and the socio-cultural value of board games is defended.
