Abstract

Food industry has focused on functional food development, by enriching traditional food with acknowledged healthy nutrients. Recently, EU published agreed criteria on which functional food allegations should be substantiated. The taskforce of the European project proposed that the science of functional food should be structured in seven topics concerning functions to be improved, avoiding classification based on the nature of products. In the last few years, the potential of nutrients to alter a number of gene expressions has been evidenced, opening up the possibility to modify gene expression by modifying the diet. Nutrigenomics is the science aimed to elucidate the molecular mechanisms involved in health-related nutrients and opens up the field to customised nutrition. The second part deals on how the firm Ordesa has applied scientific advances to innovate and launching in the market a range of children milk specially designed to help synchronising circadian cycles of newborns.
