Abstract

This article looks at the additional taxes imposed on the Crown of Aragon’s Jewish aljamas (a Spanish term of Arabic origin used in old official documents to designate self-governing communities of Moors and Jews living under Spanish rule). The six extraordinary charges levied between 1293 and 1297 offer a general insight into the imposition of additional taxes and the evolution of the tax system in the late 13th century.
