Riots against the Jews of Besalú in 1391 and their social repercussions Authors Joel Colomer Casamitjana Universitat de Barcelona Keywords: riots, Armagnac, Jews, credit, conflicts between factions, Besalú, Sales, Bellpuig Abstract Studies of the assaults on Jewish quarters in the Crown of Aragon in the year 1391 feature prominently in Jaume Riera’s extensive body of work. A singular case to study is that of the Jewish community of Besalú. Notarial documents point to an air of tension prior to the Jews being attacked. The arrival from the north of Armagnac companies and conflicts between factions caused alarming social instability, a tense atmosphere that was the backdrop to the attack on Besalú’s Jewish quarter. Some Jews had to take refuge outside the town, in the fortified enclosures of certain Christians with whom they had previously had economic and commercial dealings. Keywords: riots, Armagnac, Jews, credit, conflicts between factions, Besalú, Sales,Bellpuig Downloads Download data is not yet available.
