Abstract

This article presents the different written forms of the town of Balaguer’s name as they appear in medieval Arabic texts. It can be seen that the name is written in these texts without an r at the end. The consonant’s absence is in keeping with the form of the name used in the oldest known Latin document, which is from the year 1024. The data provided may help Romanists determine when, how and why this r was added in the dialects of Catalan.
