Abstract

The concept of food additive has expanded up to include nutritional supplements in the formulation of animal feed, also named functional ingredients, in order to improve not only animal production, but also health of consumers of meat, eggs, milk or other food. Examples of these substances and their functionality are mentioned in the present paper. The availability of full analysis of chemical composition of raw materials is essential for the manufacturing of animal feed, such as the content of amino acids in proteins, or fatty acids in fats. Besides, it is necessary to assess its digestibility, the actual nutritional value, etc. Ensuring the absence of pesticides and drugs, as well as biotic contaminations is also required. All these analytical data are expensive and mandatory to use the specific software for Particle size, hardness and durability of granulation, colour and flavour must be assessed as well, because of both animal features and farmers opinion. Specific examples are mentioned. The complexity of the manufacturing processes of animal feed, which nowadays is subjected to a strict control to assure humans safety, is evidenced. Thus, mass media challenges, often without proper substantiation, are putting an unfair pressure on this key activity.
