Abstract

Fullat: when confession becomes pedagogical memoir. This paper presents a systematic, analytical approach to the memoirs of professor Octavi Fullat born in 1928 published in three volumes between 2006 and 2010 under the following titles: La meva llibertat (My freedom, 2006), La meva veritat (My truth, 2008) and La meva bellesa (My beauty, 2010). Besides dealing with stylistic and content-related aspects of this trilogy, the paper traces the evolution of the thinking of professor Octavi Fullat, contemporary Catalonias most important educational philosopher, who follows in the wake of earlier thinkers (Eugeni dOrs, Joaquim Xirau, Joan Roura-Parella, Jaume Bofill, Alexandre Sanvisens, etc.). Among other issues, the paper takes an in-depth look into his philosophical understanding, which is based on an anthropology that pres- ents the human as a nomadic, dissatisfied being, struggling between reason and barbarity, who ambles in search of mystery. These principles confer a touch of indigence on his philosophy of education, from the time when a human being never quite complete can neither reach a goal nor a definitive form because the teleology has failed. At the most, the future and, therefore, the pedagogical axiology can only be drawn from the past. Consequently, a bridge is formed between experience and expectation, between tradition and the future, to such an extent that the memory of the West Jerusalem, Athens, Rome becomes a condition of possibility for education.
