Abstract

This works analyses the pedagogical reception of the work of Jaume Balmes (1810- 1848), the most outstanding Catalan thinker of the 19th Century. Following a review of his links with the Catalan philosophical tradition and the different interpretations of his work, his years of learning are addressed in greater depth. Balmes is then presented as an enlightened clergyman who proposed an integral training that is developed in different aspects that afford his pedagogy meaning. Naturally, straight-thinking by way of veritable intellectual a propedeutics constitutes a key point in this article which brings to light the links between the pedagogy of Balmes and El Criteri (1843), his most significant work. And without forgetting other didactic, political, social and religious aspects of his philosophy of education.
