An approach to use of the Nahuatl language at the workplace in the state of Veracruz

in the workplace, and about the value of that use within the local labor market. A case study was conducted by interviewing 49 graduates of the Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural (Mexico). In spite of the phenomena of linguistic discrimination and displacement, however, the studied workers stated that they speak and write Nahuatl in their work activity. Even their status as Nahuatl speakers was judged important and necessary for good job performance by employers. This means that relevant vocational training and the development of the work function of Nahuatl have a positive impact on its appraisal. This study also highlights the possibilities for investigating the minority languages of Mexico from the labor-related standpoint for an integral language planning policy.
