Abstract

Food packaging challenges at present are highly demanding, and should accomplish several functions such as quality preservation, carrying consumer information, as well identification capabilities as traceability, bar codes, etc. On the other hand, new food processing technologies such as irradiation, high pressure, microwave, etc. should be compatible, as well as environment friendly requirements. Innovation trends on food packaging, in particular material improvements to enhance barrier effect, are described and discussed, in particular concerning active and intelligent packaging.
