In food and health, everything is too complex for simple explanations Authors Robert Savé Monserrat DOI: https://doi.org/10.2436/20.2005.01.120 Keywords: food, viticulture, oenology, health, climate change, sustainability Abstract It may be deduced that the global change caused by a socio-economic system that is at the very least unfair, and the climate change which is derived from it and which is especially serious in the Mediterranean world, promote major individual and social Health problems. In this respect, the wine industry, being closely and willingly linked to a territory, is one of the most seriously affected agricultural sectors. The WHO (https://www.who.int/es/about/governance/constitution) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. It is necessary to be careful with the evaluations which are made of products, industries and other such aspects since life, which is very complex as a whole, involves much more than simple cause-and-effect relationships. Consequently, weighting, moderation, objectivity and common sense must form the framework and substrate on which evaluations are made of sectors, products and populations, and in the end of society itself and the individuals who form part of it and provide it with its structure and functionality. This is important for the socio-economic and cultural models, for the maintenance of a functionally and positively active population and for the landscape. It is also important for a model of food sovereignty and security which will unavoidably need to be assumed, given the objectively evident information forming the basis of the forecast that, in 2050, in association with climate change in the Mediterranean, there will be an average reduction of 17% in food availability. The lack of agricultural productivity in the countryside and especially in the drylands will lead to their depopulation and to the growth and densification of metropolitan areas with the consequent problems of individual and social health. In the First World, where we are lucky to live, everything is too complex for simple explanations in matters of food and health. Moreover, as history shows, every act and decision has effects, intended or not, and therefore science, culture and common sense are and will be the key to developing holistic solutions.
