Tradition and technology: the case of Girona’s Tarlà Authors Daniel Trias Jordi Torrent Miquel Teixidor Jaume-Albert Cruset DOI: 10.2436/20.2004.01.67 Keywords: tradition, Girona, Arduino, mechanical engineering, mechatronics. Abstract The city of Girona celebrates its Spring Festival at the end of April. The festival’s most iconic character is Tarlà, an articulated figure suspended from a metal rod by its hands, performing pirouettes. Tarlà commemorates a figure who, according to legend, entertained the neighbours on Carrer Argenteria during a lockdown caused by a plague epidemic. This tradition was at risk when the apartment with the balcony from which Tarlà was spun became private property. In this article we give an overview of the technological efforts made to preserve this tradition, ensuring that young and old may continue to enjoy a celebration that dates back to the early 19th century.
