De la Vernatxa a la garnatxa blanca, evolució històrica Authors Josep Maria Puiggròs i Jové Abstract En el procés de recerca sobre l'origen de les varietats de cep que considerem autòctones de Catalunya, ens trobem que la garnatxa ja és mencionada, d'una manera molt primerenca, en obres de la nostra literatura de l'època medieval, a partir del segle XIV, amb autors com Eiximenis o Bernat Metge. A partir d'aquesta època, trobem una sèrie d'obres que ens citen els diferents tipus de garnatxa amb formes molt diverses com: vernaccia (1321), vernassa (1385), vernaixa (1399, 1417), guarnatxa (1564), vernacha (1622), vernatxa (1647), granat-xa (1787), garnachas (1797), garnat-xa (1870), garnaxa (1871), garnacha blanca (1875, 1908) i garnatxa blanca (1911), i això per fer-ne només una petita selecció. És molt possible que la garnatxa tingui el seu origen dintre el territori de l'antiga corona catalanoaragonesa i, a la vegada, contemporàniament, hi hagi una vernaccia que, de manera especial, correspon a terres italianes de la Toscana i la Ligúria i que citen Dante i Bocaccio, i que pot tenir una procedència de la Mediterrània oriental. A la Terra Alta i a les comarques tarragonines, les primeres documentacions fins ara trobades corresponen a Lluís Ponç d'Icard (1564) i, pel que fa a Gandesa, el primer escrit que parla de vernatxa és de mossèn Onofre Català (1647). En aquests moments, la garnatxa blanca ha fet un gran salt i és molt considerada dintre dels nostres vins blancs. Cal admirar el gran treball que s'ha portat a terme a la Terra Alta.
