Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Originality: the work has not been submitted to any other journal for publication and has been sent solely to Arxiu de Textos Catalans Antics for evaluation and publication.
  • Authorship: the authors declare that they have read and approved the manuscript and that the authorship requirements have been met. Each one of the persons who appear as an author must have made a relevant contribution to the design and development of the article and must accept responsibility for the content, for which purpose they must agree with the definitive version of the work. Thus, in general, the following requirements must be met in order to appear as an author: have contributed substantially to the conception and design of the article, to the compilation of data or to the subsequent analysis and interpretation; have produced the draft article or critically proofread the intellectual content and have approved the version that is ultimately submitted.
  • The original must be in MS Word (.doc, .docx) or Open Office (.odt) format.
  • All works must be submitted in Garamond typeface, size 16, single-line spacing with standard margins (2.5 cm top and bottom; 2.5 cm left and right). Paragraphs will begin with an indent on the first line (1.25 cm). Pagination will be in Arabic numbers, which will be placed at the bottom right hand side of the page.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidelines

1. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE JOURNAL

1.1. Objectives, Target Audience, Scope

Arxiu de Textos Catalans Antics (ATCA) is an annual publication that engages in the publishing of editions, studies and exhibitions of positive science, albeit without excluding other types of research, related to authors and the work of Catalan or anonymous authors before the 19th Century, regardless of the language in which they were written, in view of the fact that Catalan people historically travelled extensively and settled in different parts of the word in the period in question.

The yearbook is intended for the international scientific community that works in the field of the humanities and the related sciences and technologies. ATCA’s pages are therefore open to text editions, studies about anonymous authors and works, translations and other contributions pertaining to anonymous authors and works, such as descriptions of manuscripts, incunabula, old books, news about works and their sources, copyists, paper mills, palaeography studies, miniature, typography, bibliographers, booksellers, book merchants, libraries and pedagogical studies.

The semantic content of the publication extends to the entire geographic and historic arc over which Catalan language has spread, and to all the kingdoms and lands that were part of the Catalan-Aragonese Crown. It also comprises studies pertaining to texts by non-Catalan authors and to anonymous non-Catalan works related to the aforementioned geographic and historic area.

Since numerous scholars the world over engage in the field of study in question, ATCA also disseminates the work of others in the form of bulletins and reviews.

1.2. History of the Journal

The journal saw the light in Barcelona in 1982, published by the Fundació Jaume Bofill, which sought to stimulate basic research initiatives in Catalonia. In 1986, the fifth volume of the journal was published jointly by the Fundació Bofill and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans. In 1987, the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Facultat de Teologia de Catalunya produced the volume six, and continued to collaborate until the year 2010, when volume number 29 was published.

The publication of volume number thirty heralded a generational hand-over that affected the publication’s yearly frequency. This hand-over was consolidated by volumes 31 and 32, and as of volume 33, the journal embarked upon a second era, in which its objectives did not change, although it underwent a certain restructuring befitting the changes prompted by the technical instruments that underpin information nowadays and the quality criteria prevailing in the world of scientific production. In this regard, the journal will apply, besides the usual criteria, the blinded external peer-review criterion, although it will continue to be a publication by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and the Facultat de Teologia de Catalunya.

1.3.  Language

ATCA’s language is Catalan, on account of constitutional imperatives, which does not mean that any other type of language is excluded, barring those written in non-Latin alphabets, a fact to which the journal’s long-standing tradition can attest. Nevertheless, it should be emphasised here that texts rendered in Semitic languages by Catalan authors or anonymous works produced in Catalonia in any of these languages within the historical reach defined herein will be processed in the same way as works published in the yearbook written in languages such as Latin, mediaeval romance languages, etc.
