Immigration and Demographic Acceleration in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area

Abstract

The Barcelonan metropolis has undergone major urban and socio-economic transformations in recent decades, in which the changes in the socio-demographic composition of the metropolitan population have played a preeminent role. As a result, a new demographic reality is drawn due to the emergence of two phenomena: on the one hand, the progressive ageing of the population and, on the other, two waves of international immigration as a result of the globalisation of migratory flows. The conjunction of both phenomena leads to an increasingly accelerated demographic change, especially in the context of the second of the aforementioned migration waves, which was particularly intense until the advent of the COVID-19 crisis. To measure these changes and their spatial impact, the speed of population renewal in the Barcelona metropolitan area is analysed on an infra-municipal scale. To do so, this article draws from data from the Continuous Population Register of the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (IDESCAT), using two measures to quantify this demographic acceleration: a population turnover rate and the migration share of turnover calculated from the two components of population growth.
