The sociolinguistics of the Basque language: from the social movement to academic practice

Abstract

This paper presents the status of the sociolinguistics of the Basque language and, more specifically, that of its research, in recent decades. To this end many issues are discussed, such as the emergence, evolution and development of the current paradigm, its dimensioning, its main agents and promoters, the degree of consolidation, the scientific or applied orientation, etc. Similarly, we examine the social rooting that feeds this area of study. We conclude with an assessment about the progress that this sociolinguistics has made, as well as about its current weaknesses.
