Abstract

2023) and, occasionally, on place names (Hill, 2008; Pipitone, 2019; Regan, 2022) show how “names [are] linguistic elements [not] only employed as identificatory or reference devices but that are also used to accomplish a variety of culturally, socially, and interactionally relevant tasks” (Ainiala and Östman, 2017: 1). The present research contributes to the scarce work on toponymic socio-onomastics with the aim to show how the preference for one toponym or another is, in fact, motivated by what the sign (the toponym) indexes (Eckert, 2008). In this investigation, I focus on speaker attitudes towards place naming, showing the relation between the toponyms for Castelló, a town in the Valencia province, Spain, and its inhabitants’ ideologies. I show how the people of Castelló, in the region of La Ribera Alta, have crystalized ideological stances (Silverstein, 2003) regarding Catalan, Valencian, and Spanish in the toponyms of their hometown.
