Abstract

The dissolution of the Soviet Union in December 1991 caused the disappearance of the Soviet media and informative monopoly. The policy of privatization of state assets, accompanied by a wild competition for their appropriation (Castells, 2001), resulted in a complete transformation of all economic sectors, particularly the media sector. The entry of private companies and the transformation of the business model led to a struggle between the new oligarchs to achieve hegemony in media. This article aims to analyze the main changes that took place in the media sector during the twenty years of Russian democracy and in particular the evolution of the television industry from the first phase of liberalization that began in 1991 (dominated by the oligarchs close to Yeltsin) to the current model of hegemonic control by companies and oligarchs close to Putins and Medvedevs governments.
