Abstract

The mines de Gavà archaeological park community promotes education in and through heritage. Nowadays, as a result of technological and social changes, new educational practices and relationships between heritage institutions and schools are arising. As heritage institutions increase access to digital objects (images, audios, videos, online activities) through their websites, it is important to consider these as teaching and learning tools. The aim of this paper is to provide a useful insight into knowledge and skills that pupils gain through the use and production of digital objects with cultural heritage content. This case involved the heritage curator of the Municipal Institute for Cultural Heritage Management of Gavà (http://www.patrimonigava.cat/cat/imgpcn/m.asp), a history teacher, a pupil group from the secondary school Els Tres Turons (ages 12 to 13) and a researcher from the Open University of Catalonia. Among other results, it showed that: 1. Exercises involving the use and production of digital objects with cultural content mainly promoted conceptual learning. 2. The production of digital objects activated more conceptual, procedural and attitudinal content than the use of digital objects with cultural content.
This pilot experiment in heritage education is one of three cases from the 3c4learning action-research project (Sprünker, 2008).
