Abstract

This article looks at the magazine entitled Quaderns d’Estudis Polítics, Econòmics i Socials published by the group of Catalan Republican exiles in Perpignan between 1945 and 1947. The aim of the magazine was to unite the political ideas of Catalonia’s new government, whose creation they believed was imminent. Based on the liberal ideology of the Grup d’Estudis Polítics, the pages of the magazine intended to represent a plural voice for reconstructing the nation. Nonetheless, beyond this ultimate aim, and reflecting the most common disputes in exile, uaderns (a publication that owed a lot to the Catalan nationalist politics of the early 20th century) offers readers a symbolic narrative to rebuild Catalan norms. This article aims to clarify the resources that make a group more cohesive (language, history, myths, land, the name of the language) which were contained in the magazine and their symbolic representation. In other words, it is a study of the elements of social identity observed in Quaderns based on the Catalan linguistic community, with language as its backbone.
