Abstract

This article investigates the complex process which led to the creation, in Barcelona, of the Republican National Centre and, afterwards, of the Nationalist Republican Federal Union (UFNR). The UFNR was the continuation of the CNR, set up in 1904 as a result of a split in the Regionalist League. The members leaving the League positioned themselves as leaders of a greater Catalan nationalism («Catalanism») that was more open and progressive than regionalist Catalanism; a Catalanism whose main objective was to establish the Republic. This article explores a nationalist republican project which appeared in 1904 and which, in 1910, received a significant qualitative boost from the foundation of the UFNR, considered the first progressive republican Catalan political group in the political history. The article follows the evolution of republican nationalism, between the years 1904 and 1910, within the Catalan and Spanish political framework in general and particularly regarding two of Catalonias major events in the twentieth century: the emergence of Catalan Solidarity and the Tragic Week, which would have a direct impact on the formation, development and establishment of republican nationalism.
