Between norms in language use and norm proposals: research, implementation, establishment

Abstract

In dealing with the social establishment of linguistic norms, we must take into account that it is a part of a more important aim: achieving quality of language in public functions. It is therefore the result of a number of factors and social agents. J. Maurais’ studies on linguistic norm and linguistic quality in the context of Quebec are good referents. Linguistic norms are primarily social and they are inscribed in language variation. Nowadays, any standardizing intervention must be based on the social and variable nature of language norms. Standardization as establishment or implementation of the norms is a cooperative process in which the results depend on the systematic coordination between the standardizing authority and the major agents involved.
