Abstract

This article has a dual purpose. The first aim is to display the analytical capacity of a case study when exploring the expression of identity and the different roles assumed by individuals when communicating with one another. To do so, the author draws on both the participation frameworks of Erwing Goffman (1981) and person deixis and its grammatical manifestations (Levinson, 1983; Nogué, 2008). The second objective is to show how grammatical structure can provide linguistic indicators relating to identity and role, by placing emphasis on the way in which the collision among two or more of these roles is linguistically conveyed.

Key words: person deixis, identity, participation role, participation framework.
