1. General journal information

Since 1977, Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana (TSC) has been the official once-yearly journal of the Societat Catalana de Sociolingüística (SCS, formerly the Grup Català de Sociolingüística), a subsidiary of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC). In accordance with the SCS's statutory objectives, Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana encourages research in sociolinguistics that broadly and inclusively embraces the Catalan-speaking regions of Andorra, France, Italy and Spain. Welcomed are all previously unpublished articles in fields such as the sociology of language, the anthropology of language, the social psychology of language, variationism, language policy and planning, language rights, etc, especially those referring to Catalan-speaking areas and to linguistic normalization processes. Articles should preferably be written in Catalan. The journal readers are mainly sociolinguistic experts, usually but not always attached to a university, and also include members of the public at large with an interest in the sociolinguistic situation in Catalan-speaking regions. Invited are any theoretical, empirical or methodological contributions that help to better understand a field as vast as sociolinguistics. TSC is published in hardcopy and digital formats on a once-yearly basis. Journal content can be accessed via this link. Treballs de Sociolingüística Catalana has attained an impact index of 10 (ICDS) on a scale from 0 to 11 in the Information Matrix for the Analysis of Journals (MIAR), is indexed in different databases, including Emerging Sources Citation Index (WoS) and Linguistic Bibliography, and enjoys the top rating level in the CARHUS system, used to classify scientific journals in the fields of Social Sciences and Humanities.

From its foundation (1976) and until issue 14/15 (2000) the magazine was directed by Francesc Vallverdú and published by Editorial Tres i Quatre. Issue 16 (2002) was directed by Francesc Vallverdú and Emili Boix, while since Issue 17 the director has been Prof. Boix.

Past and planned issues since 2000 are as follows: Issue 14-15 (2000) "Sociolinguistic aspects of extra-European immigration to the Catalan Countries"º, Issue 16 (2002) "Language and society in the País Valencià", Issue 17 (2003) "Oral use of Catalan. 3. Submissions and fees

The journal accepts the following submissions: original articles for scheduled monographic issues, other articles for a miscellaneous section, and book reviews. Articles complying with the publication regulations can be submitted using the website form. We strongly recommend authors to first send their proposals to the editors at the following email address: tsc@iec.cat

Access to the journal content is free of charge and no fees are charged to authors who publish in the TSC.

4. General publication guidelines

Monographic and miscellaneous articles should be no longer than 40,000 characters including spaces, any appendices and references. Reviews should be no longer than 10,500 characters including spaces. Very exceptionally, it may be possible to exceed these limits for justifiable reasons.

  1. TSC publishes articles written mainly in Catalan. All articles must have the title, abstract and keywords translated to English. Articles not in Catalan or English must supply the title, abstract and keywords in Catalan and English as well as in the original language.

  2. The journal is managed by the IEC's Open Journal System.

  3. Journal articles are evaluated using the double-blind system, i.e., authors remain anonymous to reviewers, while reviewers remain anonymous to authors.

  5. Authors agree to the introduction of changes to content after review and to changes in style if considered necessary by the editors.

5. House style

Articles must be submitted electronically in accordance with the following:

  1. Documents must be submitted using the journal template, available on the website. Style and content formats should be preserved. Section headings - Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion, Acknowledgements and References - are proposed but are not mandatory. Blacked- or greyed-out spaces are reserved for completion by the editors.

  2. Maximum title length is 80 characters with spaces.A short title (maximum 50 characters with spaces) can be proposed to head individual pages of the article.

  3. The abstract should be no longer than 250 words and should be followed by 3-6 keywords.

  4. Title, abstract and keywords must be provided in Catalan and English and in the third language if another language is used.

  5. Since the articles will be reviewed using a double-blind system, they must be anonymized in the initial submission before they can be reviewed. The Open Journal System explains how to anonymize articles and remove meta-information from files. Personal information of authors appears in the forms used to submit articles.

  6. In the post-review stage, authors must submit the final version of their article with the corresponding personal information. To facilitate indexing by databases, it is recommended to use name+first surname only or name+two surnames joined by a hyphen, and also to use the exact same name as used for other indexed articles. For the receipt of correspondence (physical or electronic), corresponding author details must be included as follows: institution, department, postal address, email address, website, telephone and fax.

  7. Documents can be delivered in ODT, RTF or DOCX formats.

  8. Texts in any language to be published in the journal will be corrected by the IEC editorial service.

Other indications for the presentation of articles are as follows:

  1. Articles should be written in Times New Roman 12, 1.5-spaced, with standard margins. Footnotes should be indented and should be composed in Times New Roman 10. Callouts should be placed after punctuation.

  2. Articles should be formatted according to the journal template and the instructions provided in this website.

  3. Citations and referencing should be according to IEC criteria (APA Style).

  4. Tables and figures (graphs, images and illustrations) should be inserted in their place in the article. It is recommended to also attach figures - of the highest possible quality (300 dpi, or 400x600 pixels) - as separate files.

6. Editorial process

  1. The editorial team notifies the author of the receipt of their articles and subsequently notifies acceptance for review or rejection along with an explanation. Receipt of the article does not imply acceptance for publication.

  2. The editorial team makes an initial editorial assessment that consists of checking for the thematic suitability and interest of the article in accordance with TSC editorial criteria and for compliance with formal submission requirements for the journal.

  3. Once the article is considered to be a possible candidate for publication in TSC, it is sent for double-blind review to two or more expert external reviewers. Articles that are considered to possibly be acceptable after modifications are returned to the authors for correction and resubmission.

  4. The selection of the reviewers, of national or international origin, is the responsibility of the editorial team, which takes into account their academic, scientific and professional expertise. The editorial team reserves the right to accept or reject articles based on external reviews, to introduce style changes and to cut texts that exceed the permitted length, while respecting the original content.

Acceptance or rejection of an article is based on the following editorial criteria: a) it is original (i.e., an entirely original article making valuable contributions);b) it is current and novel;c) it is relevant (i.e., results are applicable to specific problems); d) it significantly advances knowledge;e) it is scientifically reliable and valid (of proven methodological quality, with suitable references);and f) it is properly presented (well written, well organized in terms of logical coherence and material presentation).

7. Author rights and responsibilities

Intellectual property in articles belongs to the respective authors.

By submitting their articles to TSC to request their publication, authors agree to the following:

Accordingly, the general public may reproduce, distribute and communicate the article provided the author and publisher are acknowledged and as long as no commercial or derivative use is made of the article.

  6. TSC cannot be held responsible for ideas and opinions as expressed by the authors of articles published in the journal.
