Abstract

Hipertextuality, context and time are key factors in credibility construction and cognitive authority on the Internet. The plethora of news currently available on the Internet creates the need to apply filters in order to select content and assess its quality. The notions of credibility and cognitive authority fulfil this purpose and since the early 21st century Communication Studies departments in Catalonia have intended to explore these filters, although this task is still pending. This study provides an extensive revision of the literature on these concepts and proposes a theoretical model based on exploratory empirical research in which a qualitative approach is taken by means of a case study on the financial crisis that began in 2008. From a methodological point of view it introduces a variant of the semi-structured interview, with the addition of navigation. The results pave the way for exploring the validity of content within the framework of other news contexts in Catalonia.
