Abstract

Television is the main source of information for eight out of every ten Spaniards; yet televised news broadcasts including those aired on public channels respond inadequately to the information needs of the public. The content, format, and methodology of todays televised news fail to deep- en public awareness. News broadcasts emphasize individual values over collective ones, facts over causes, and trivial news and opinion over information. The author proposes a revitalized type of news broadcast for public television one that would enable the public to understand the country and the world in which they live, evaluate the tasks of their leaders, form coherent opinions on events, and achieve a higher cultural level.
