Abstract

The present article provides a critical perspective of the role played by the media in present-day society, especially regarding economic power. The first section is devoted to economic events of the past thirty years that have changed power relationships within our socioeconomic system; the second section deals with mechanisms such as control of property and finance, and the logic of business management by which political-economic power intervenes in the production of media discourse. In conclusion, several questions are posed regarding the concentration of economic, political and media power and their effect on individual freedom and the democratic function of society.
