Abstract

This paper seeks to provide insight into the nature of iconic metaphors, that is, image metaphorsbe they pictorial or audiovisual. Many iconic metaphors produce effects that strongly resemble those of the verbal metaphor. Yet the nature of visual-audiovisual discourse substantially changes the mode of expression and perception. Both the dividing line and relation between visual-audiovisual and verbal metaphors remain unclear. A phenomenon essential to the verbal metaphor is doubtless at play in the visual metaphor and, if so, elucidation of its role in visual communication is necessary. Finally, we wish to put forth an intuition we have about the metaphor in general: it seems to play an unclear but fundamental role as a double bridge between clear communication and fuzzy communication, and between oral communication and visual. It is highly probable that the iconic metaphor plays a unique and crucial role in these relationships. Deepening our understanding of the metaphor in the area of image seems, a priori, to promise important contributions to the field of communication.
