Abstract

Research on communication in the Valencia Country was formalized and empowered by coherent research teams and projects only when university degrees in communication science were granted, beginning in 1986. Prior to that turning point, however, there were scholars and researchers in related fields who motivated interest in matters of communication, thereby helping in the emergence of the field. The present article analyzes who those researchers were and in what contexts they worked and carried out their research. It is an overview intended to aid in our understanding of the references and traditions on which the first scientific studies on social communication were based, or from which they diverged.
