Abstract

The Catalan education act. political dimension and pedagogical opportunity. This paper corresponds to a presentation given by the author at the opening session of the 2008/2009 academic year of the Catalan Society of Pedagogy. At that time, debate on the future Catalan Education Act was at its most heated. The paper analyses several aspects of the Act that, in the authors opinion, were the most contentious. After reviewing some of the contradictions of the declaration of principles, the author addresses a number of more specific issues connected with the language regime, the educational community, participation in the education system, schooling, assessment, etc. The aforementioned Act was passed on 10 July 2009, so the text of this presentation now constitutes a point of refer- ence for reviewing from a diachronic perspective the debates accompanying public discussion on the Act.
