The use of Catalan in papers published in Revista d’Innovació i Recerca en Educació: A critical analysis Authors Francesc Martínez-Olmo Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9719-2808 Felipe González-Catalán Institut de Desenvolupament Professional, Universitat de Barcelona, Barcelona https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1153-1723 DOI: 10.2436/20.3007.01.228 Keywords: Linguistic diversity, minority languages, scientific publishing, educational research, institutional support, automatic translation, Catalan language Abstract The use of Catalan in scientific publications is essential for the maintenance of lingüístic diversity and the preservation of minority languages. Publishing in Catalan, especially in such fields as educational innovation and research, just as is done by Revista d’Innovació i Recerca en Educació (REIRE, Journal of Educational Innovation and Research) of the University of Barcelona (UB), offers such advantages as connecting with the localcommunity and normalising the Catalan language in science. The aims of this article are to explore the advantages and challenges of publishing in Catalan, especially in the field of educational innovation and research; to describe how the frequency of use of Catalan has evolved; and to discuss some possible proposals. Since 2008, REIRE has published 300 articles, 22% of which in Catalan. Despite a negative trend in the use of Catalan in this journal since 2012, there have been ocasional increases, indicating continued interest from authors. To reverse this situation, it is necessary to promote institutional support strategies for increasing the presence of Catalan in scientific publications. These strategies include, for example, the use of automatic translation to improve accessibility and International visibility, despite the limitations in translation accuracy, especially with respect to cultural context.
