Abstract

This paper analyses some findings on democratic education, which the Educational Research Group of the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (GREUV) has been carrying out since 2013. It reflects on the challenges of extending the democratic participation of students in secondary schools. This paper first describes the conceptual framework of Catalan democratic schools in the current socio-political situation. Next, different areas of democratic participation identified in the five participating centres are considered, and lastly four different tensions that emerged in the schools that are addressing the challenge of advancing towards democratic participation in secondary education are discussed.
