Abstract

The article is the result of an in-depth investigation about the republican soldiers who fought in the Second World War in the French army. It analyses the different types of volunteers, origins, period of time and reasons for enlistments, and shows the plurality of regiments and fronts in which they fought. It also places special emphasis on the young people of that generation, the diverse fate of the prisoners of war and the experience of war. It also shows the process of historical recovery of these combatants, relegated to invisibility at the beginning of the Cold War.
