The Industrial Revolution in Catalonia (1832-1935) Authors Jordi Maluquer de Motes Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Keywords: Industrial Revolution, modern economic growth, Catalan industrialisation. Abstract The Industrial Revolution changed the world with the introduction of new technologies and the transition to new manufacturing processes in the late 18th century first in Britain and afterwards in continental Europe (Belgium, Switzerland, France and Germany). In Catalonia the Industrial Revolution began with the arrival of the steam engine in 1830-1840. Later on, Barcelona became a successful textile centre since it already had a well-established cotton industry, spreading throughout Catalonia and followed by many other industries. Thanks to the cotton and wool industries, it became cheaper and easier in a way to allow mass production, with Catalonia becoming a newly industrialised country in a modern sense, an exception in Mediterranean Europe. Keywords: Industrial Revolution, modern economic growth, Catalan industrialisation.
