Abstract

Evolution, justifications and proposals of great hydraulic works in the basins of Rivers Muga and Fluvià (1850-1980): the central role of the irrigation. During the last 150 years the great hydraulic works, by action or by omission, have played an outstanding paper although quite unknown in two Catalan Mediterranean river basins: the Muga and Fluvià (province of Girona). With the aim to go more in its study now we make a retrospective and comparative reconstruction of large hydraulic works proposals (reservoirs, associated channels,...) that in this period have been designed and, if implemented, in both basins. The analysis gives special attention to the justifications, purposes, rhetoric, and social agents that have inspired its design and the causes that led to its success or failure. All this is framed in the planning, policies, and hydraulic legislation pertaining to the state. Here is added the influence of the neighbouring River Ter when is decided the partial supply with its flow to Barcelona and its influence zone in the decade 1950-59.
